Irish communication leader Kalle Ryan is today’s #WeLeadComms honoree.

In his words:

“The story of my career has been far from linear—but then, the best stories rarely are. I began by studying Germanic languages, followed by a Masters in literature and film, and later picked up a pedagogy qualification along the way.

“But the connecting thread through it all has been communications, which has been the cornerstone of every role I’ve ever held and every opportunity I’ve ever created for myself.

“My career story is really two parallel stories. One as an internal comms expert and innovator at Google & Meta, and the other as an award-winning creative artist.

“When I finally saw the opportunity to merge those stories, it accelerated my career immeasurably.

“At the outset, it was primarily my language skills that got me in the door at Google. A little flair for cleverly engaging audiences didn’t hurt either, leading me into Executive Communications. But when I fully embraced my creative mindset at work, I found my sweet spot.

“At Google, I led the legendary Cloud 9 innovation lab, and at Meta, I founded two cutting-edge teams — ‘Internal Comms Innovation’ and ‘Global Internal Video Communications’.

“The latter was a career highlight, where I anchored the flagship internal video series “The Blast”, putting me in the room with trailblazers like Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg. Those conversations taught me the value of dreaming big and the freedom to fail. Simultaneously, my creative life (as a playwright, performer and poet) gave me rich, collaborative experiences that fed directly into my professional life. These golden moments taught me that creativity is not just something I do but a way of seeing the world, and it’s the very thing that sets me apart as a communicator.

“Now, all that comes together in Poetic– www.poetic.ie– the strategic comms consultancy I founded. Whether I’m crafting an internal comms strategy, a clever keynote speech or running a world-class workshop, my focus is always on helping organizations creatively solve their ‘comms conundrums’ (be it on the page or on the stage).

“With communications as my North Star and creativity as my constant compass, I now see that my career story was always leading to Poetic, where I help others tell their stories too”
