Creativity has much to do with experience, observation and imagination, and if any one of those key elements is missing, it doesn’t work
Bob Dylan is one of our greatest living writers and artists. Yeah, yeah, you hate his voice but he’s still a creative genius. A master of reinvention.
In the quote above, there is something so simple and simultaneously open about Bob’s take on creativity. You could say that we don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows creatively for Bob Dylan.
So, in that spirit and in honour of the release of “A Complete Unknown” today (it’s like Christmas morning for me and my son) I wanted to share a funny Bob-Dylan-adjacent video I made with my friend Enda Roche many years ago for our long-running cabaret night The Brownbread Mixtape at The Stag’s Head (Filmed by the legendary Bonnie Dempsey and team at Dyehouse Films ).
While the idea of Bob Dylan singing The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is ridiculous, it also has some undefinable creative magic to it. I guess in some small way we were trying to pay homage to Dylan’s own gift for reinvention (and his magpie-like abilities to absorb and recycle other creative works) As Bob Dylan said himself:
I just want to create my own version of you
Nice one Bob! And by the way, there’s no snappy sales strategy here, no pitching for a gig, or showing you how to crush it on LinkedIn. This is just a fun little creative piece of work that might brighten your day (Feel free to share it onwards if you think it might make someone else smile)
Sometimes creative inspiration comes from sticking together different things and seeing what happens. That’s the story of my (creative) life.
