We need to rediscover our sense of wonder.
These days, we have access to more information than at any point in history. But, true moments of wonder have never felt rarer.
Over the festive season I was at a party, where I met a lovely magician called Simon, and he pulled off a spectacular card trick that actually amazed me. It wasn’t just the magic trick itself that left an impression. It was the feeling it created. For a moment, everything else faded, and I was lost in awe.
How seldom those precious moments of wonder are now.

It also reminded me that behind every one of those moments of wonder is someone who’s spent years honing their craft. Like Simon’s magic trick, creativity isn’t just about the big reveal; it’s about the dedication behind the scenes that makes it possible. I saw a parallel with my own creative superpowers and when organisations choose to work with me. They’re not just getting creative ideas (although there will be no shortage of those); you’re tapping into decades of creative practice (with practice being the operative word) and expertise.
Before the night ended, Simon handed me his personal deck of cards, telling me that I was the kind of person who sees the magic in things. It was incredibly gratifying and that exchange has stuck with me. We all need to see more of the magic in things. We need to have more moments of wonder. And that’s what I always try to do in my creative communications work.
