Culture Night 2025: Poetry and spoken word with local heroes and Hollywood heavyweights
Last Friday was Culture Night in Ireland, an annual free celebration of art, culture and creativity. And it was yet another magical experience. I had the honour of performing some spoken word poetry at the newly regenerated Bolands Mills, and shared the stage with other wonderful wordsmiths.
I decided to write a poem especially for the occasion about The Factory. A special place with rich creative history in its walls and many legends who have walked its halls (U2, David Bowie, Bolshoi Ballet, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Kirsten Sheridan, to name a few!).
The most heartwarming moment was when a wonderful local lady from Ringsend came up afterwards, clutched my hand in hers, and said the poem reminded her of all the reasons she was so proud of growing up in the area. She asked me to print out the poem and pop it in her letterbox (old school comms!) which I intend to do later today.
Those little moments of connection, community and conviviality are what make Culture Night a uniquely special occasion. And poetry has a way of connecting the dots for us all.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Art is the great connector in the universe.
