Why Creative Thinking Is An Essential Skill In The Workplace

Trainings that are fun and functional? Yes, they do exist: poetic.ie

Creativity workshops are the fuel for innovation

Creative thinking is an intentional thing. And the key difference between a creativity workshop that transforms you, compared to one that just tranquilises you, comes down to whether the participants are actively creating or passively consuming. It’s really as simple as that.

In my Creative Catalyst sessions, participants don’t just talk about creativity, they practice it. And this isn’t about watching someone else be creative (though I’ve been called one of the 100 most creative people in Ireland – just sayin’). It’s about properly unlocking the creative potential already sitting in the room, waiting for permission to fly.

Real workshops involve building things. Testing ideas. Making beautiful messes (figuratively speaking) before finding elegant solutions. Mine include everything from paper airplanes to a mish-mash of LEGO® bricks, and, most importantly, curious minds.

The Science Behind Creative Thinking Skills

Creativity isn’t a magic trick. It’s about putting in the work. That’s why they call it creative practice. And practice, as we know, makes perfect.

When I work with teams using LEGO® Serious Play® methodologies (Yep, I’m a certified master trainer, not just some Irish lad who likes playing with colourful toys), we’re activating neural pathways that conventional meetings simply don’t reach. Your brain starts to work in a different way when you’re actively creating rather than passively absorbing dense dull slides. This isn’t new age nonsense, it’s cognitive science.

Let me put it this way. When you’re expressing ideas with 3D models that about the conundrum you’re solving, there are very different parts of your brain engaging and firing. This hands-on type of approach is actually more of a minds-on approach really. It leaves a different impression and a more satisfying connection. And it’s why teams leave my workshops not just with temporary inspiration but with lasting techniques.

From Workshop to Workplace: Making Creativity Stick

The true measure of any workshop isn’t how people feel during it – it’s what happens after. The training sessions I’ve developed after decades of working with Google and Meta executives aren’t just a fun day away from their (really impressive, ergonomically perfect) desk areas. They’re designed to shape practical skills for the modern workplace. And these skills are not just reserved for C-Suite leaders, these same skills are crucial for everyone at the company. They’re instantly transferable too. Creativity is a many splendored thing.

Participants in my Design Thinker workshop don’t just learn about design thinking as a concept, they apply it directly to a business challenge they cooked up themselves. It moves the challenge from the abstract into the real world. And, best of all, participants walk away with real next steps. Because, in fairness, what good is creative thinking if it doesn’t translate into actual doing?

Isn’t It Time To Invest in Creative Thinking?

If you’re ready for a workshop that doesn’t waste time and actually delivers on the promise of enhanced creativity (and gives your team practical tools they’ll use long after the session ends), then we should probably talk.

And by way of avoiding the prospect of writing an FAQ, I should say that all my workshops are customisable to your specific challenge or conundrum. Whether you’re planning an offsite, need team building that actually builds something meaningful, or want to embed creative problem-solving into your organisation’s DNA, there’s definitely a workshop configuration that will fit.

And unlike other workshop facilitators, I promise not to use the phrase “blue-sky thinking” even once. Apart from just now.
